"Stinkin' Thinkin'"
Do you ever have those days where you second
guess yourself? How about those days where you feel less than? How many times
have you compared yourself to others and you end up wallowing in self-pity? I
think most of us have had one of those days.
Every now
and then, I get in a funk. I question my abilities and compare myself to others.
Next thing I know, I find myself rehearsing self-destructive thoughts that suck
the joy out of my life. The “stinkin’ thinkin’” statements like “I’m not good
enough”, “my achievements don’t measure up”, or this one, “who will ever love me
in this mess?” replay through my mind relentlessly. Some people can quickly recognize when they
are going down that path and are able to steer themselves away. Others slowly wander
onto that path, and it takes a startling moment to make them realize they’re
going around the same mountain. Such thinking & negative self-talk can lead
one to question one’s self-worth and/or lead one into depression. How do I get
out of this funk state, “stinkin’ thinkin’”, and self-defeating habit? How?!
“Finally, brothers and sisters, fill your minds
with beauty and truth. Meditate on whatever is honorable,
whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is good,
whatever is virtuous and praiseworthy.” (Philippians 4:8 The Voice).
“Words kill, words give life; they’re either
poison or fruit—you choose.” (Proverbs 18:21 MSG)
We can choose to change the direction of our thoughts and fill our minds with loveliness, goodness, honesty, and just things. We can choose to speak life into the very depths of our soul and reap the bountiful fruit that our words produce. Have you ever heard of the phrase, “be careful what you say to yourself, you are listening?” Wow, how true is that? But some of us are guilty of impulsively blurting phrases that are of no virtue and thinking things that devalue us. Our Creator took time to “fearfully and wonderfully” make us in the most secret place. Let’s listen to a great reminder from Lauren Daigle.
Warm Wishes,
Carline
